Japanese: conjugating i-adjectives
Hello everyone! ^^
How are you all doing?
In this post I will talk about i-adjectives in Japanese and how to conjugate them.
Let's learn some adjectives๐
Happy = ๅฌใใ (ใใใใ - ureshii)
Sad = ๆฒใใ (ใใชใใ - kanashii)
New = ๆฐใใ (ใใใใใ - atarashii)
Cute = ๅฏๆใ (ใใใใ - kawaii)
Expensive = ้ซใ (ใใใใ - takai) ; it can also mean 'High'
Cheap = ๅฎใ (ใใใ = yasui)
Alright!^^
Now, let's conjugate these adjectives^^
They are all in the present tense. Let's make them in the past tense now.
Here is how to do it in Japanese:
First, note that these adjectives end with (ใ - i). So, to conjugate them to the past tense, we do the following:
Drop (ใ - i) and replace it with ใใฃใ (katta).
That is really all you need to do!
Isn't it easy?! I love Japanese! ๐
So, to say I was happy , you say: ๅฌใใใฃใ。(ureshi katta)
Try to make the past tense of the remaining adjectives!
Now, how about negating them?
Do you know how to say I am not happy ? (I hope you never need to say this sentence!♡)
Since ๅฌใใ ,which means happy, is an i-adjective, then we drop the (ใ) and, this time we replace it with (ใใชใ - kunai).
→ I am not happy =
ๅฌใใใชใ (ureshi kunai).
Easy peasy! LOL
Now, for i-adjectives, you know how to form the:
Present tense: affirmative and negative.
Past tense: affirmative.
How about past tense negative?
Here is how:
Present tense affirmative: ๅฌใใ (ureshii)
→ Present tense negative: ๅฌใใใชใ (ureshikunai)
→ Make it in the past tense by dropping ใ and adding ใใฃใ
→ ๅฌใใใชใใฃใ (ureshi kuna katta) = was not happy.
You can follow this conjugation rule with all of the i-adjectives, including ๆฌฒใใ which means want that we talked about before.
You can read my post about the usage of (hoshii) here:How To Say: 'I Want Something (A NOUN)' in Japanese .
ๆฌฒใใ = want
ๆฌฒใใใชใ = don't want
ๆฌฒใใใฃใ = wanted
ๆฌฒใใใชใใฃใ = didn't want
I hope you find this post helpful and informative!
Leave me a comment with your example sentences!
Thanks for reading and see you soon๐
