Korean: How to say: (If~)

Hello everyone!😃

I hope you are doing well!

In this post I will share with you what I learned about how to say (if~) in Korean.
I think it is a very useful expression to know!

Alright! Let's begin^^

So basically, we are going to be attaching either (면 myeon) or (으 면 eumyeon).
We will attach them to the stem of the verb or the adjective.

So how to get the stem of the verb or the adjective in Korean?
very easy! ^^

Let's take an example.
가다 (kada) = to go.
To get the stem of this verb you just drop the 다 (da). So you get: 가 (ka).

Another example:
예쁘다 (yeppeuda) = pretty.
To get the stem of this adjective you just drop the 다 (da). So you get: 예쁘 (yeppeu).

Alright, Now you know how to get the stem^^

To say: (If~) you attach either (면 myeon) or (으 면 eumyeon) to the stem.
How to choose which one to attach? This depends on the stem.

There are 2 cases:

The first case is: If the stem of the verb or adjective ends with a vowel or the letter ㄹ:

in this case, you simply just add (면 myeon) directly to the stem of the verb or the adjective.
examples:
가다 = to go.
Drop da to get the stem. You get, 가.
This stem ends with a vowel, so you just add 면 to the stem.
you will get: 가면 (kamyeon) = if it goes.

예쁘다 becomes 예쁘면 (yeppeumyeon) because its stem 예쁘 ends with the vowel ㅡ (eu).
예쁘면 (yeppeumyeon) = If it is pretty.

살다 (sarda) = to live.
Its stem is 살 (sar).
Its stem ends with ㄹ.
So in this case you add (면 myeon)
You will get: 살면 (sarmyeon) = if it lives.

The second case is: If the stem of the verb or the adjective ends with a consonant:

In this case you choose the second ending (으 면 eumyeon), and attach it to the stem.

examples:
먹다  (meogda) = to eat.
To get the stem, drop 다(da), you will get:  먹 (meog)
It ends with a consonant.
In this case we add 으 면 to the stem.
You will get: 먹으면 (meogeumyeon) = if it eats.

Easy, isn't it?😃
It really is!

You just add one of the 2 endings: (면 myeon) or (으 면 eumyeon) depending on the stem.
If it the stem ends with a vowel or ㄹ you choose (면 myeon).
If the stem ends with a consonant, you choose (으 면 eumyeon).

Super easy and super useful!😄
